Jesus embodies God’s mission, for he was sent by the Father into the world to bring God’s love in salvation. This is expressed in one of the most famous verses in the Bible:

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

(John 3v16, NRSV)

As the church, made up of followers of Jesus, we seek to continue the mission that he gave us – a mission of love for God and neighbour and of bringing the good news of Jesus to the world. Two passages from Matthew’s gospel explain this:

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

(Matthew 22v36-39, NRSV)

Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

(Matthew 28v18-20, NRSV)
